B.C. First Nation Buys Major Sunshine Coast Forestry Operation in $80M Deal
The deal gives the nation control of 469,200 cubic metres of annual timber harvest and includes a long-term fibre supply agreement with Western Forest Products.
- On Tuesday, Tla'amin Nation acquired 100% ownership of the Stillwater Forest Operation from Western Forest Products for about $80 million. The deal transfers the major forestry operation near Powell River, B.C., to the First Nation.
- The Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corp provided a $64 million loan guarantee supporting the Nation in the transaction. President Kristan Straub noted that access to affordable capital has historically been a barrier for Indigenous communities seeking greater ownership stakes.
- Spanning about 1,540 square kilometres on Tla'amin traditional territory, the operation will manage an annual allowable cut of 469,200 cubic metres. The Nation and Western established a long-term fibre supply agreement to support the company's coastal B.C. manufacturing.
- Adam Culos, vice-president of forestry at Thichum Forest Products, called the deal a "significant moment" for the region. Kristan Straub said the purchase puts the Nation "in the driver's seat of a major forestry operation," strengthening its economic future.
- Western Forest Products President Steven Hofer stated the transaction recognizes the Nation's unique history and values. The agreement adds certainty and stability for the company as it transitions to higher-value product manufacturing, Hofer noted.
