Health Canada Approves Moderna’s mRNA Flu and Flu-COVID Combo Vaccines
Moderna says the vaccines will not reach pharmacies in time for this respiratory virus season, while Canada becomes the first country to authorize both.
On Thursday, Health Canada authorized Moderna's mRNA flu vaccine and its combination flu and COVID-19 shot for adults 50 years of age and older.
Canada is the first country to authorize both vaccines, following Moderna's mRNA flu shot approval in the United States in August and the combination vaccine in Europe last April.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends everyone six months of age and older receive the non-mRNA flu shot available this year, with higher doses for adults aged 65 and older.
Despite the new authorization, Moderna told The Canadian Press that these vaccines will not reach pharmacies in time for the current respiratory virus season.
While Moderna and Pfizer both have mRNA COVID-19 vaccines available in Canada this year, the newly authorized flu-related shots are not yet part of the immunization landscape.
