29 English council elections postponed, says Steve Reed
The government will delay 29 of 136 local council elections to support restructuring into single-tier unitary authorities, with elections for new councils planned in 2027.
- Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Steve Reed has announced that 29 council elections scheduled for May 2026 will be postponed as part of the Government's reorganisation plans.
- Reed told MPs that he had carefully considered over 350 representations from councils regarding the postponement and had decided to bring forward legislation to postpone 29 elections.
- In areas where elections are postponed, existing councillors will have their terms extended, and new elections will be held in 2027 once the new unitary councils are agreed.
