Watertown School Board Bans Song in Phil Hands’ Cartoon
Composer Omar Thomas will conduct the free church performance after the school board removed the piece over its LGBTQ+ history.
On Wednesday night, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church hosted composer Omar Thomas conducting a performance of 'A Mother of a Revolution,' allowing Watertown High School students to play the instrumental piece after their school board banned it from the spring concert.
Last week, the Watertown School Board banned the piece, alleging it violates their 'controversial issues' policy and endorses violence. Board Vice President Sam Ouweneel defended the 7-1 vote as necessary to prevent 'indoctrination' in classrooms.
Hundreds attended the church performance, which was livestreamed to viewers in at least 27 states and three countries. Composer Thomas described the gathering as an 'island of joy in a sea of despair.'
Alumni and students are organizing against the board, with 2009 graduate Lindsay Kinateder stating they have consulted lawyers regarding potential Title IX violations. The group is gathering signatures and documents to build a case.
The music honors Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender activist credited with leading the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ history. Organizers plan another performance this Saturday at the Minocqua Brewing Company Tap Room in Madison.
