Search Underway for Child Who Reportedly Disappeared in Lake in Michigan City
Four divers were injured as 4- to 6-foot waves forced officials to halt the search for a missing child, police said.
On Monday, a juvenile wearing red shorts disappeared into Lake Michigan near Washington Park Beach in Michigan City after LaPorte County 911 received a report at approximately 5:43 p.m.
A National Weather Service beach hazards statement warned of dangerous waves as high as five feet and "life threatening currents" during the incident. Such hazardous lake conditions significantly complicated search efforts.
During the search, three Michigan City Fire Department divers and one Indiana Department of Natural Resources diver sustained injuries. The MCFD divers were transported to Franciscan Health for evaluation.
Police suspended dive operations Monday night "due to hazardous conditions that posed a risk to responder safety." Recovery efforts will resume Tuesday morning as soon as conditions allow.
The Michigan City Fire Department urges everyone to "pay close attention to beach conditions" and stay out of the water when hazardous conditions are present. Strong currents can "quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
