Water companies told to refund £260m to customers for poor performance
- The Environment Agency's assessment shows all but one of the nine English water and sewerage companies were rated 'requiring improvement' or worse last year, with serious pollution incidents up 60% and a collective score of 19 stars, the lowest since 2011.

English water companies have collectively been given the lowest environmental rating by the Environment Agency (EA) since records began. Companies were ranked on a scale of one to four stars. Out of a maximum score of 36 stars for all nine companies, the firms together scored 19, the lowest since the EA began monitoring.
