Warning as EU Entry-Exit System Causing ‘Three-Hour Waits’ at Airports
ACI Europe reports up to 70% longer border processing times and three-hour waits at peak, urging urgent EU border system review to prevent further disruption.
- On Thursday, Airport Council International Europe called for an urgent review of the EU Entry/Exit System introduced on October 12th amid operational issues.
- Technical reviews show operational problems stem from IT infrastructure issues including outages and configuration failures, plus partial self-service kiosks and Automated Border Control gates availability and insufficient border guards deployment.
- ACI Europe reported border control processing times at airports increased by up to 70 per cent, causing passport control waits of three hours at peak traffic periods in France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
- ACI urged that if issues are not stabilised by early January, the European Commission and Schengen member states must allow flexibility, as raising the registration threshold to 35 per cent on 9 January will worsen congestion.
- ACI says the system will replace manual passport stamping and identify overstayers, urging the rollout schedule due by 9 April 2026 to be moderated during the six-month introduction.
