- On Monday, the Australian Rugby League Commission confirmed Walters as coach for the three-Test tour of England, edging out Cameron Smith for the role.
- With Meninga off to the Perth Bears, Walters replaces him after Meninga's move, while Fittler declined and Bennett was ruled out.
- From 2021 to 2024, Walters coached Brisbane to a grand final and led Queensland to two State of Origin wins.
- Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys said Walters was `well placed` to win the series, but doubts linger over the availability of key trio, Payne Haas, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.
- The Ashes tour begins on October 25 at Wembley and concludes on November 8 at Headingley, and Walters' contract covers only this series with a likely extension for next year's World Cup.
