‘Wait till you discover…’: Rahul Gandhi reacts as Elon Musk ups ante over India’s telecom rules
Starlink has statutory permits but still awaits security clearance and spectrum decisions as rival satellite operators also seek final approval, officials said.
- On Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded to Elon Musk's criticism of India's Starlink licensing delays, replying, "Wait till you discover the other guy," in apparent reference to Reliance Industries Chairman Ambani.
- Despite spending five years complying with every requirement of the government of India, Musk alleged that unnamed "oligarchs" are blocking Starlink's entry to protect their business interests.
- The Ministry of Communications stated the government maintains a "fair and non-discriminatory" authorization framework, with security assessments currently underway for all three applicants including Starlink and Reliance Jio.
- While Starlink has built 20 gateway sites in India, Reliance Jio is simultaneously developing a sovereign low earth satellite constellation costing an estimated $10–15 billion.
- Gandhi cautioned against compromising Brand India's interests to accommodate what he described as "crony distractions," stressing the importance of promoting innovation and maintaining the country's credibility in the global technology landscape.
