Jen Pawol Makes Baseball History as First Woman to Umpire an MLB Game
ATLANTA, AUG 8 – Jen Pawol ends a 150-year MLB umpiring gender barrier after over 1,200 minor league games and a decade-long career, joining the Braves-Marlins doubleheader crew.
- On Saturday, Jen Pawol will become the first female umpire to work a regular-season MLB game in the Atlanta Braves–Miami Marlins doubleheader, calling balls and strikes on Sunday.
- From 2016 onward, Pawol began her pro umpiring career at the Umpire Training Academy in Vero Beach, Florida, progressing through Rookie ball, the New York/Penn, Midwest, South Atlantic leagues, and reaching Triple-A in 2023.
- In April 2023, Pawol became the first female umpire in 34 years to reach Triple-A, officiating over 1,200 minor league games, Pawol said.
- Following the NBA and NFL, Pawol’s call-up makes MLB the third of the "Big Four" men's professional sports leagues to feature a female official, marking baseball's first female umpire in 150 years.
- With this milestone, Pawol said she hopes her achievements might inspire more girls and women to get involved in the sport, completing Wren's 50-year journey from Seattle.
