Vijay Meets 'Rebel' AIADMK Leaders Supporting TVK Ahead of Floor Test, Party Shows Signs of Split
The rebel group says more than 30 MLAs are ready to back TVK as it breaks with the NDA and seeks recognition in the assembly.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay met with rebel AIADMK leaders S.P. Velumani and C. Ve. Shanmugam, who confirmed support for his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government ahead of Wednesday's Tamil Nadu Assembly floor test.
Internal divisions within the AIADMK have deepened following the party's disappointing performance in the 2026 Assembly elections, where it secured only 47 seats and intensified pressure on general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Rebel leaders declared Velumani as the "AIADMK Legislature Party leader" and submitted a letter to the Speaker, while Palaniswami's camp insists he retains control, claiming 26 of the 47 legislators remain loyal.
Newly elected Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar must decide on rival leadership claims before the vote, as senior leader O.S. Manian confirmed Palaniswami's faction will vote against the motion of confidence.
Shanmugam announced the rebel faction is severing ties with the NDA alliance, warning that collaborating with their rival DMK would lead to "the party's disappearance," escalating internal party tensions.
