Viral Post Brings Strangers to Arlington Grave of Fallen Soldier
The message reached millions and drew visitors to share photos and videos from Alan Shaw’s gravesite in a show of support.
- On Sunday, Gold Star widow Sharrell Anne Shaw posted a request on X asking strangers visiting Arlington National Cemetery to photograph her husband's grave in Section 60, calling it "probably a long shot." By early Tuesday, the post had over 4.9 million views.
- Staff Sergeant Alan W. Shaw was killed in Iraq on February 9, 2007, at age 31, leaving his widow living in Benton, Arkansas. For nearly 20 years, Sharrell Shaw has visited his gravesite at Arlington, but felt guilt about missing Memorial Day weekend.
- Within 24 hours, Shaw's post generated millions of views and hundreds of replies. Hundreds visited Section 60, two dozen left flowers, thousands prayed from home, and one visitor from York, Pennsylvania recorded a message: "Hi Sharrell, my name is Tom, and I am here to honor your request."
- Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, visited Shaw's grave after the official Memorial Day ceremony and placed a challenge coin from her office. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also visited with his family; Gabbard said, "Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice."
- Shaw told Fox News that "watching Americans from every political spectrum coming together on Memorial Day weekend to honor just one soldier is one of the most beautiful things I've seen as an American in a long time." She emphasized Gold Star families fear "losing them slowly over time as the world moves on and fewer people remember their name. But today showed me that Alan will never be forgotten.
