- Born on January 1, 1941, Govardhan Asrani moved to Mumbai in 1962 and joined the Film and Television Institute of India after meeting filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
- Appearing in more than 350 films across five decades, Asrani earned acclaim for comic timing, notably as the jailor in Sholay and in over 25 films with superstar Rajesh Khanna.
- In keeping with his wishes, the family held a private cremation at Shastri Nagar crematorium, Santacruz on Monday evening with family and close friends present; the cause of death is yet to be ascertained, his manager Babubhai Thiba said he had been unwell.
- The timing of his death surprised audiences and peers as he shared a Diwali greeting hours before, with the Hindi cinema industry calling his loss irreparable.
