Vet prescription fees capped under rule changes
The Competition and Markets Authority says the changes will improve price transparency after finding veterinary prices rose nearly twice as fast as inflation.
On Tuesday, The CMA made new rules legally binding, capping veterinary prescription fees at £21 with practices having up to 12 months to implement mandatory changes.
The CMA investigation into the veterinary sector found prices rising at nearly twice the rate of inflation, prompting the regulatory action.
Practices must publish a "comprehensive" price list and provide written estimates for treatments expected to cost £500 or more, with data shared through the Royal College and Veterinary Surgeons' "Find" service.
Independent vet owner Cate Titterton warned the changes could force price hikes on services, believing there is "one clear winner": larger vet groups and corporates.
British Veterinary Association President Rob Williams said practices were already largely working toward these remedies, noting the association pushed back to "ensure its remedies do not disproportionately impact smaller, independent practices.
