'Urgent action' needed to help thousands of patients waiting for organ transplants, Health leaders say
NHSBT said 700 potential donations did not proceed and family consent fell to 57%, prompting an urgent appeal for people to register their wishes.
- NHS Blood and Transplant launched an urgent campaign during Organ Donation Week, calling on one million people to register on the NHS Organ Donor Register to address a 9% decline in deceased donor rates.
- Deceased donation rates are trending 9% below last year, while family consent rates dropped from 67% in 2020/21 to 57% last year, significantly reducing donation opportunities.
- Over 700 potential donations were lost between April 2021 and March 2026 because families were unaware of loved ones' wishes, while the transplant waiting list has risen to more than 8,700 people.
- Mrs Jolliff, whose son Ollie received a liver transplant at 11 months old, urged the public to confirm their decisions on the register, noting families support donation 90% of the time when wishes are known.
- NHSBT Director Anthony Clarkson described the situation as "one of the most challenging periods for organ donation in over a decade," announcing the first-ever urgent action plan to address the crisis and reduce waiting lists.
