Venezuela Quake Response Requires ‘Massive Collective Effort’: UN Aid Chief
OCHA said urban search and rescue teams are deploying as authorities report 164 dead and 971 injured after the twin quakes.
- On Wednesday, June 24, twin earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, killing at least 164 people and injuring 971. The tremors, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, destroyed multiple buildings and marked the country's strongest seismic event in over 125 years.
- The first 7.2 magnitude quake struck near San Felipe, home to 220,000 people, while nearly eight million Venezuelans were already in need of humanitarian support before the tremors hit. The disaster threatens to deepen an already severe humanitarian crisis.
- UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher announced the deployment of Urban Search and Rescue Teams through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group after speaking with interim President Delcy Rodriguez. Fletcher stated the UN is "fully mobilised" to support the response.
- Acting Executive Director Carl Skau stated that "swift international support is critical to respond" as the WFP and UNHCR mobilize alongside Humanitarian Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla to assess needs and identify priorities in affected areas.
- Recovery efforts are expected to continue for months, according to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. The UN warns the disaster will require "massive collective efforts" to support the government-led response and help affected communities.
