Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez to Undertake Five-Day Trip to India
The five-day trip comes as India boosts Venezuelan crude purchases and seeks broader cooperation in trade, investment and renewable energy.
- Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez will visit India from June 3 to June 7, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday, following the deferral of the International Big Cats Alliance Summit.
- The visit comes as India, the world's third-largest oil consumer, grapples with disruptions from the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, which has virtually shut the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that previously handled more than 40% of India's crude oil imports.
- Indian refiners have ramped up purchases, making India Venezuela's second-largest oil buyer in May with imports reaching about 427,000 barrels per day after sanctions eased in February.
- Rodriguez will lead a high-level delegation including ministers overseeing foreign affairs, finance, and transportation for her sixth visit to India, following previous trips in 2015, 2019, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
- Trade ties deepened after India halted purchases last year when President Donald Trump authorized a 25% discretionary tariff, though current transactions now operate under U.S.-approved guidelines following President Nicolas Maduro's capture.
