- On Thursday, the Department of Justice announced the arrest of eight people for defrauding Medicare of $50 million through sham hospice schemes across Southern California, spanning from Anaheim to Simi Valley.

- Fraudulent claims for non-terminal patients comprised the bulk of charges, while Young Joo Ko, 59, of East Hollywood, faces charges for forging immigration medical documents to defraud green card applicants.
- First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli called the region a "kingdom of fraud," while FBI Assistant Director Akil Davis said the agency aims to "reverse that trend" of massive annual losses.
- Dr. Mehmet Oz, who runs the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, noted that federal officials "took out" 221 hospices recently and plans to review every hospice in California.
