- On Sunday, the Uttarakhand state cabinet approved the Uttarakhand Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025, which will abolish the Madrasa Education Board Act, 2016 and extend recognition to Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist and Parsi institutions.
- On February 8 last year, authorities demolished a mosque and madrasa in Banbhoolpura amid legal disputes, while the Dhami government acted against illegal madrasas in recent months.
- The bill establishes the Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority to oversee approvals and standards, requiring institutions to register under the Societies Act, Trust Act or Companies Act and hold assets in their name.
- Under the bill, recognition may be revoked for financial irregularities, lack of transparency or threats to social harmony, with criteria set by the Uttarakhand Board of School Education.
- It will be introduced in the monsoon Assembly session starting August 19, 2025, and from July 1, 2026, the legislation will repeal madrasa laws and enable study of Gurumukhi and Pali in recognized institutions.
