USS Nimitz, Now in Service Until 2027, Heads to SOUTHCOM Exercise
USS Nimitz leads Carrier Strike Group 11 in multinational exercises with 10 regional navies to enhance partnerships and maintain U.S. naval presence in Southern Hemisphere waters.
- The USS Nimitz will sail around the southern tip of South America as part of the U.S. 4th Fleet's Southern Seas 2026 deployment, U.S. Southern Command announced Monday.
- Under a congressional mandate requiring 11 operational aircraft carriers, the Navy announced this month that Nimitz will stay in service until at least 2027, when USS John F. Kennedy is commissioned.
- The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group 11 comprises the flagship, Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Gridley, Carrier Air Wing 17, and six squadrons including Strike Fighter Squadron 137.
- Joint exercises are planned with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Uruguay, with port visits scheduled in Brazil, Chile, Panama, and Jamaica.
- Rear Adm. Carlos Sardiello, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command, noted that such deployments demonstrate the Navy's commitment to ensuring a secure and stable Western Hemisphere.
