USDA Secretary Calls Miller 'Unserious' After He Bashes Federal Screwworm Response
Rollins said the USDA is moving at “Trump speed” as it deploys sterile flies, quarantine zones and surveillance to stop the cattle parasite.
On Monday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins criticized Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller as "unserious" after he suggested ranchers might avoid reporting screwworm infestations due to quarantine fears.
Five cases of the flesh-eating New World screwworm have been confirmed in Texas, prompting federal officials to expedite aerial dispersal of 4 million sterile flies weekly to collapse the population.
Miller, who lost his Republican primary earlier this year, called the USDA's response "slow, bureaucratic and incomplete," urging deployment of the Screwworm Adult Suppression System alongside sterile flies.
Rollins appointed San Antonio businessman and Texas A&M Regent John Bellinger as senior advisor for New World screwworm preparedness to coordinate federal and state containment efforts.
The conflict reflects a rare rebuke of the Trump administration from Miller, a longtime ally who received President Donald Trump's endorsement before losing his re-election bid earlier this year.
