Cleveland Fed: Tariffs Are Raising some Prices in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky
- The U.S. Commerce Department announced on June 12 that 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum content in imported home appliances will take effect on June 23.
- This tariff increase builds on the March adjustment that raised duties from 25% to 50% on steel and aluminum imports, implemented due to concerns about unfair trade actions posing risks to national security.
- The expanded tariffs apply to steel and aluminum used in eight types of home appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, and similar products, adding further financial strain amid already high steel costs.
- The Cleveland Fed reported last week that these tariffs are causing cost increases for businesses in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and West Virginia, with some manufacturers raising prices to offset tariffs.
- As a result, the tariffs may reduce U.S. industrial output and contribute to low consumer confidence, while public disapproval of the tariffs' economic impact and the administration's handling of the economy remains strong.
