US Sanctions DR Congo Ex-Leader Kabila over Rebel Ties
Treasury said Kabila backed the Rwanda-supported M23 and Congo River Alliance, which it says caused thousands of civilian deaths and mass displacement.
The U.S. Treasury and State Departments sanctioned former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila for financially supporting Rwanda-backed rebel groups M23 and Congo River Alliance in eastern Congo.
The sanctions freeze any assets Kabila holds in the U.S. or that pass through U.S. financial institutions and aim to hold accountable those obstructing peace efforts.
Kabila is accused of backing a candidate opposing the current leader and encouraging defections of Congolese troops to rebel forces.
The sanctions uphold a U.S.-brokered peace deal between Congo and Rwanda, with officials calling on regional leaders to reject those perpetuating violence.
