US states warn food aid benefits will halt if federal shutdown drags on
A federal shutdown could halt SNAP and WIC benefits for over 42 million Americans, escalating food insecurity and increasing demand on already strained food banks.
- With the federal shutdown that began Oct. 1, U.S. states warned SNAP and WIC benefits may not be distributed in November, risking a gap for more than 41 million and nearly 7 million recipients.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture told states on October 10 not to send recipient data to electronic benefit transfer processors, amid a partisan stalemate over a spending bill.
- Food banks and state anti-hunger groups are preparing for SNAP and WIC disruptions, and Minerva Delgado said, `Families are going to be hurt by this should it continue, at a time we know families are struggling to make ends meet.`
- States including Louisiana, Vermont and Virginia pledged to keep aid flowing, Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Republican, introduced legislation to fund SNAP, and the USDA has about $5 billion in contingency funds against about $8 billion monthly costs.
- With time running short, Congress and President Donald Trump could still strike a deal, but Trump administration funding and policy changes this year risk deepening hunger if benefits stop.
