The Iowa Republican, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 1981, will take the position that goes to the longest-serving senator in the party that controls the chamber. The post customarily goes to the the longest serving member of the Senate majority party, and Grassley takes the post for the second time after Republicans regained the majority in November’s election.
