US Ramps up Military Presence Near Venezuela

The exercises aim to enhance counter-narcotics and security training with US Marines and naval forces amid rising tensions with Venezuela, officials said.

  • On Sunday, the United States will begin five-day military exercises in Trinidad and Tobago, with Marine Expeditionary Unit 22 intensifying drills until Friday, Nov. 21, John Jeremie said.
  • US Defense officials framed the deployment as counter-narcotics targeting "narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere," while the Trinidad and Tobago government said the drills enhance tactics and train local security personnel.
  • A US aircraft carrier strike group recently arrived in the region, and in recent weeks the US deployed warships, fighter jets and thousands of soldiers, striking 21 alleged drug-smuggling boats killing at least 80 people.
  • Following recent naval movements, Caracas halted energy deals with Trinidad and Tobago, and Nicolás Maduro denounced the drills as `irresponsible exercises` during November 16-21.
  • Caracas says the deployments are a ploy and this is the second joint training exercise in less than a month, following last month's warship visit to Venezuela's capital and the October guided‑missile destroyer dock at Trinidad for four days.
