At Shinnecock, the Forecast Calls for a Windy, Wild US Open
USGA officials are softening greens and trimming speed to keep the course fair as winds in the 20s mph could turn treacherous.
The 126th Open begins Thursday at Shinnecock Hills with players and USGA officials bracing for challenging conditions. The final practice day Wednesday brought a rare calm, with flags hanging limply behind the 18th green.
John Bodenhamer, chief competitions officer at the USGA, described excessive wind as 'problematic,' saying it will impact the championship unlike others. Previous visits in 2004 and 2018 saw wind and warmth dry greens to near unplayability.
Bodenhamer said the key strategy is 'tough but fair': 'We could brutalize this place the next few days if we wanted to. That's not what we're about.' Greens are kept at roughly 10 on the Stimpmeter.
Wind in the 20s mph is expected throughout Thursday, with gusts nearly twice that strong in the afternoon, Bodenhamer said. The forecast heightens anxiety as the opening round unfolds at 6:35 a.m.
Adam Scott, playing in his 100th consecutive major, hopes greens firm up to reveal Shinnecock's greatness. World Nos. 1 and 2, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, begin on opposite sides of the course.
