US military carries out large-scale strikes against Islamic State targets across Syria

The U.S. and allied forces launched Operation Hawkeye Strike targeting over 70 ISIS sites across Syria after an ambush killed three Americans in December, CENTCOM said.

  • Saturday, U.S. Central Command said U.S. and partner forces carried out large-scale strikes across Syria at around 12.30 p.m. ET as part of Operation Hawkeye Strike directed by President Donald Trump.
  • Following the December 13 ambush in Palmyra, Syria, two U.S. soldiers, Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and one U.S. civilian interpreter were killed.
  • A U.S. official told CNN that the operation fired over 90 precision munitions to hit more than 35 targets using over two dozen aircraft, while CENTCOM said forces killed at least seven IS members and eliminated four weapons caches.
  • CENTCOM emphasized that `We will not relent,` and stated the strikes aim to root out ISIS, protect forces, with `Our message remains strong.`
  • In late December, CENTCOM reported 11 missions over a 10-day period and a Dec. 19 strike that hit 70 targets, while about 1,000 U.S. troops remain and Tom Barrack met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.
