US launches retaliatory strikes in Syria

The US military targeted over 70 ISIS sites in Syria, killing at least five militants including a drone-cell leader, in retaliation for last week's deadly attack on US personnel.

  • United States forces launched strikes on more than 70 targets across Syria on Friday, using fighter jets, attack helicopters and artillery to hit ISIS infrastructure, the Pentagon said.
  • On Saturday last week, two US Army soldiers and a US interpreter were killed in Palmyra, Syria, prompting President Donald Trump to vow to do 'big damage' to militants.
  • US Central Command described the weapons systems used, detailing Strike Eagle jets dropping GBU-31 GPS-guided munitions, AH-64 Apache helicopters, M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, and Jordanian Armed Forces fighter support.
  • Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory said at least five Islamic State members including a drone-cell leader were killed in Deir Ezzor province, while Syria’s state-run SANA reported security forces arrested five suspects on Sunday.
  • The operation comes about a month after Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syrian official, met Trump at the White House, and Trump has now launched at least three major military actions.
