US Justice Department to monitor elections in all 50 states for 1st time

The agency says the monitors will assess compliance with federal voting-rights laws and report potential violations after Election Day.

  • On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, the Department of Justice is deploying 1,000 monitors to all 50 states, marking the DOJ's largest election monitoring effort ever conducted nationwide.
  • Since the Voting Rights Act of 1965, federal authorities have dispatched monitors to ensure compliance with federal law; DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels stated these officials will "merely observe" and report potential legal violations.
  • In Virginia Beach and Prince William County, local election officials denied monitors indoor access, restricting them to a 40-foot perimeter outside, while Charlottesville officials agreed to permit federal observers inside their polling stations.
  • According to an AG memo, federal monitors receive no more access than other "neutral observers" at polling locations and cannot interfere with voters or distribute campaign materials.
  • The deployment exceeds the nearly 300 monitors sent during the 2022 midterms; some critics, including Campaign Legal Center's Anna Baldwin, have characterized parts of the effort as "political theater.
