US STOCKS-US Stock Index Futures Steady as Democrats Seize Congress
Investors weighed tighter regulation, higher taxes and AI oversight as Nasdaq-100 futures recovered from an early 2.4% drop, Reuters reported.
On Wednesday, U.S. stock futures stabilized after falling sharply overnight as Democrats secured majorities in both the House and Senate, leaving President Donald Trump facing an opposition-controlled Congress for his remaining two years.
Investors expressed concerns that a Democratic Congress could bring tougher regulation of artificial intelligence, prompting shares of Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta to trade lower on concerns of increased oversight.
Aidan Yao, senior investment strategist for Asia at Amundi Investment Institute, told Reuters, "The significance of these midterm elections is more like a referendum on AI than a referendum on Trump."
Nasdaq-100 futures initially fell 2.4% and S&P 500 futures dropped 1.4%, though Dow futures climbed 0.46%; Elon Musk's SpaceX shares dropped more than 4% as Democrats made electoral gains.
Oil markets remain volatile as traders assess how the political shift impacts Trump's handling of the war with Iran, with West Texas Intermediate crude gaining 0.7% amid inventory report expectations.
