US imposes fresh Iran-related sanctions
- On Thursday, the Treasury Department sanctioned 17 additional vessels connected to Iran's "shadow fleet" used to transport oil and gas. The designations aim to choke Tehran's economy and end the war that began over seven months ago.
- The ongoing war with Iran has disrupted global energy markets, pushing gasoline to a national average of $4.36 per gallon. These sanctions are part of "Operation Economic Outcast," a pressure campaign to limit Tehran's petroleum profits.
- Targeted vessels include the Vanuatu-flagged TINA, which transported over 1.5 million barrels of crude in August, and the Cameroon-flagged SHENZHEN, which moved more than 3.5 million barrels since November 2025.
- Iran has stopped loading and offloading oil due to the U.S. blockade, with Kpler data showing no crude exports since August 25. The move targets the "remnants" of the shadow fleet to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
- "Treasury is starving the tyrannical regime in Tehran of the money it uses to wage war," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. He warned that no enabler of Iranian sanctions evasion is safe from the full force of Treasury's authorities.
