Lawsuit Says US Illegally Shared Confidential Information on Iranian Asylum Seekers with Iran
The complaint says officials disclosed asylum application details as part of a deportation push that plaintiffs say exposed detainees to retaliation.
A lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges the Trump administration violated federal regulations by sharing confidential asylum application data with the Iranian government, endangering countless Iranians by exposing sensitive personal details to the government they are fleeing.
Starting in March 2025, the State Department arranged monthly meetings with Iranian officials using the Pakistani embassy as an intermediary, where U.S. officials shared sensitive information about detained Iranian immigrants to coordinate deportations, lawyers for the Iranian American Legal Defense Fund alleged.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials forced detainees to meet with Iranian representatives who possessed specific knowledge of their asylum claims, including details about conversion to Christianity, LGBTQ identity, or participation in pro-democracy protests, the filing states.
Public Citizen attorney Michael Kirkpatrick requested a preliminary injunction to freeze information sharing, warning that revealing asylum records "could put them in grave risk upon return," plus risks to family members remaining in Iran.
These disclosures occurred amid a broader immigration crackdown resulting in over 600,000 deportations in 2025, with over 100 people sent to Iran and others deported to Panama and the Central African Republic despite decades-long diplomatic hostility.
