US formally designates Venezuela's Cartel de los Soles as foreign terrorist organization

The U.S. State Department labeled the Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization to expand legal and financial actions against Venezuelan officials linked to drug trafficking.

  • On November 16, the United States designated the Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization, adding it to the State Department foreign terrorist organization list and enabling new sanctions targeting Maduro's assets.
  • Known as a decentralized network within Venezuela's armed forces, the Cartel de los Soles has long been linked to drug trafficking; the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned it in July, saying President Nicolás Maduro and allies bent state power to aid trafficking.
  • More than 80 people have been killed in U.S. strikes on suspected trafficking boats, and commercial airlines including Iberia, TAP, LATAM, Avianca and GOL suspended flights after FAA warnings, with Turkish Airlines canceling November 24 to 28 services.
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the designation gives a whole bunch of new options, declining to provide details, and officials say the designation could offer legal cover for potential direct military action.
  • Seventy percent of Americans oppose U.S. military action in Venezuela, while President Nicolás Maduro and Maduro's government denied the charges and called the accusation a `ridiculous fabrication` Monday.
