U.S. auto strike expected to affect Canada in deeply integrated industry

  • Approximately 13,000 autoworkers in the United States went on strike after failing to reach a new contract with the three big U.S. auto companies. The strike is expected to have an impact on the sector in Canada due to the deep integration of the industry in both countries.
  • The United Auto Workers union members started picketing at General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis Jeep assembly plants in the United States. This strike coincides with contract negotiations held by Unifor, the Canadian union, with the U.S. automakers. Unifor is currently in bargaining with Ford and hopes to use the deal as a template for workers at other automakers.
  • The strike comes at a critical time as Unifor is in contract talks with Ford Motor Co. in Canada. These talks are taking place before the contract expiry on September 18th. Unifor is seeking an agreement that will benefit the workers and serve as a blueprint for workers at other automakers.
