US Approves $2.1 Billion Patriot Missile Sale to Ukraine

Ukraine will pay with allied contributions and European Union-backed funds as the deal aims to speed air defense deliveries before winter.

  • On Friday, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine for an estimated $2.1 billion, according to a department statement.
  • Contributions from Canada, Germany, and Norway routed through the U.S. JUMPSTART program, along with European Union Ukraine Support Loan funds, will finance the missile purchase.
  • Lockheed Martin serves as the principal contractor and plans to triple PAC-3 MSE production capacity by 2030, increasing jobs at its Camden, Arkansas, plant by 50 per cent to about 1,850.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned earlier this week that Ukraine had waited nearly a month for approval, citing intensified Russian attacks on energy infrastructure requiring urgent defensive supplies.
  • The U.S. utilizes the PURL program to facilitate missile purchases by NATO allies, as Pentagon negotiators press contractors to accelerate production and manage inventory concerns amid ongoing operations.
