USDA to Ship some DC Workers to Regional Centers, Including Kansas City
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 24 – The USDA will reduce its Washington workforce from 4,600 to 2,000 employees and relocate staff to five regional hubs to improve service efficiency, officials said.
- On July 24, 2025, USDA announced it will cut its Washington, D.C.–area workforce by more than 50% and vacate several buildings, as part of reorganization.
- USDA officials cited a bloated workforce and rampant overspending during the Biden administration, prompting reorganization.
- The USDA will relocate about 2,600 jobs, where around 4,600 work, to hubs in Raleigh, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Fort Collins and Salt Lake City, USDA said.
- Despite the cuts, all critical functions will continue uninterrupted, the USDA said, while Washington will retain no more than 2,000 employees in the National Capital Region.
- Employees can expect to receive relocation notices in October, USDA senior leadership said, and the empty South Building offers a significant redevelopment opportunity.
