The crash caused guardrail damage and lane closures on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, marking the second fatal over-the-side incident in recent years, officials said.
- On Feb. 15, a Perdue Farms tractor-trailer went over the west side of the southbound Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near the North Channel Bridge at about 6:30 a.m., and the driver was killed, officials confirmed Sunday.
- Preliminary reports say the truck hit the curb and blew a tire before going over the side, CBBT Police opened an investigation and Perdue Farms said it is cooperating fully, while a wind advisory was in effect near the bridge.
- The crash damaged the CBBT's guardrail and curb, aerial video showed the truck split open with contents floating, and CBBT maintenance crews made emergency repairs while southbound lanes were partially reopened with an official reopening estimate of approximately 8:45 a.m.
- The U.S. Coast Guard and Virginia Beach Marine Police assisted in the search as emergency crews worked at the scene, and southbound lanes remained blocked, causing delays for travelers toward Virginia Beach.
- This incident adds to a history of over-the-side crashes at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, marking the second fatal crash after the June 2023 crash amid at least 18 such cases.
