UPDATE | ‘Not defeated, but hurt’ – Dion George on his resignation from DA
Dion George cited failure to investigate alleged financial misuse and leadership compromised by African National Congress influence as reasons for resignation from the Democratic Alliance.
- On Thursday, Dion George announced his resignation from the Democratic Alliance and Parliament in a televised eNCA interview, confirming he cancelled his party membership and resigned as federal chair of finance and MP.
- While at COP30 in Brazil, George learned of a reshuffle and his planned replacement, and President Cyril Ramaphosa named Willie Aucamp at John Steenhuisen's request.
- George alleges Steenhuisen was `captured` by the ANC and other criminal interests and targeted by a smear campaign; he accuses the DA Federal Legal Commission of `whitewashing` credit-card irregularities and has lodged a detailed complaint with the Public Protector.
- Helen Zille, DA Federal Council chairperson, said George should have tested claims through the DA Federal Legal Commission as the FLC process will continue Monday, and the party wished him well.
- George demanded a full independent forensic probe disclosed to DA voters and donors before the conference and warned the party needs an incorruptible leader to remain effective in the GNU, linking failure to secure the `10%` tariff with the US to job and growth losses.
