University of Virginia strikes deal to pause Trump administration investigations
- On Oct. 22, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it halted civil rights investigations into the University of Virginia after the college agreed to follow Trump administration guidance, with DOJ saying the deal will protect UVA’s community from federal civil rights violations.
- The University of Virginia and the Trump administration have negotiated a deal ending a monthslong standoff that included President James E. Ryan’s June ouster and was under White House review on Tuesday.
- Avoiding an external monitor, University of Virginia agreed to submit quarterly compliance data through 2028 and pay no financial penalty while the Justice Department suspends probes but may resume them if progress lags.
- Interim UVA President Paul Mahoney said the deal won’t interfere with academic freedom, and UVA Board of Visitors Rector Rachel Sheridan said it preserves autonomy while keeping federal research ties.
- The agreement follows deals with Brown University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, though Columbia agreed to a $200 million fine plus a $21 million contribution and the government once demanded more than $1 billion from UCLA.
