UC Davis Receives $120 Million Gift to Expand Veterinary School
The $120 million gift will fund a new small animal hospital and research into diseases affecting animals and humans, addressing a veterinarian shortage, UC Davis said.
- Through the Weill Family Foundation, Sanford "Sandy" Weill and Joan Weill pledged $120 million to UC Davis, prompting renaming the school the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, the university said on Wednesday.
- Motivated by care their bichon frisé Angel received at UC Davis, Joan Weill said Angel's care left a lasting impression and inspired their deepening involvement with the school.
- Roughly $80 million will be used to build a new small animal teaching hospital within the $750 million Veterinary Medical Complex expansion, while $40 million will support basic science and clinical research, UC Davis said.
- UC Davis plans to grow Doctor of Veterinary Medicine enrollment from 600 to 800 and increase trained specialists from 140 to 190 to address a projected shortfall of 70,000 veterinarians by 2032, the university said.
- The Weills have contributed about $1.5 billion overall and more than $500 million to the UC system, including recent grants like a $100 million matching gift for the Weill Cancer Hub West, UC Davis said.
