Multiple Layoffs at Universal Music Group, as $270M Cost-Cutting Program Continues
The cuts follow 200 layoffs in Canada and several executive departures as UMG reshapes leadership across its labels.
On Wednesday, Universal Music Group announced significant leadership changes across U.S. and U.K. operations, with Def Jam Recordings Chairman and CEO Tunji Balogun among several high-profile executives departing as part of the restructuring.
These departures continue a 2024 'strategic organizational redesign' aimed at saving $270 million annually; Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge previously called the initiative a 'cut to grow' strategy to streamline operations.
Alongside Balogun, Republic Records Chairman and CEO Jim Roppo and UMG U.K. Chief Artist and Strategy Officer Rebecca Allen are stepping down, while Interscope Geffen A&M executives Sam Riback and Nicole Wyskoarko are also exiting.
Mercury Records Chairman and CEO Tyler Arnold and Republic Collective President and CEO Jeffrey Remedios will assume new leadership roles at Republic Records, while Island Records co-CEOs Imran Majid and Justin Eshak expand their responsibilities.
Competitors like Warner Music Group and Sony have executed similar cost-cutting programs; Netflix announced roughly 1,000 job cuts on Wednesday, reflecting broader entertainment industry efforts to manage expenses amid shifting market conditions.
