Uninsured driver jailed for killing 'cheerful' four-year-old girl
Javonnie Tavener was sentenced to five years and four months after killing a child and injuring two women while driving uninsured and using a phone in a 20mph zone.
- On Friday, Javonnie Tavener received three years and 10 months at Birmingham Crown Court plus an additional 18 months, with a six-year driving ban.
- Families walking home from Eid on Upper Highgate Street on April 14, 2024, were hit after a Corsa overtook a Mercedes and mounted the pavement.
- Court evidence revealed Tavener was using a phone, had cannabis in his system, was uninsured, remained at the scene for nine seconds, reversed dragging the child, then fled and returned about 30 minutes later.
- The crash left Mayar Yahia dead and two women injured, sparking road-safety protests, while Judge Peter Cooke and Matt MacDonald questioned why careless driving was charged instead of dangerous driving.
- Her family described Mayar as cheerful and always smiling, while Babiker Yahia said their home near the crash is a 'constant reminder' and Mayar's siblings witnessed the collision.
