America has 'true friendship' with Pakistan, says US War Secretary Pete Hegseth
Hegseth said Washington and Islamabad are building a true friendship after Pakistan helped broker a ceasefire and host talks, officials said.
On Saturday, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth praised Pakistan's leadership at the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, hailing the growing "true friendship" between Washington and Islamabad in mediating US-Iran peace talks.
Pakistan emerged as a crucial mediator following a six-week war between the US and Iran that erupted in February, prompting Tehran and Washington to seek diplomatic channels to revive peace talks.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan on Friday for its "initiative and effective efforts," while US officials have lauded Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as "true friends."
Despite these diplomatic overtures, the White House insists there is "no final agreement" on ending the conflict as President Donald Trump continues to weigh conditions for a potential resolution.
Islamabad seeks to leverage this newfound goodwill into tangible economic benefits, including expanded market access, while navigating complex regional security dynamics alongside rivals like India in the evolving US-Pakistan relationship.
