UK, Australia, Germany, Italy and New Zealand condemn Israel's plan for new operation in Gaza
GAZA CITY, AUG 9 – European leaders warn Israel's plan will worsen Gaza's humanitarian crisis, violate international law, and risk regional stability amid over 61,000 Palestinian deaths, officials said.
- Amid mounting European condemnation, European Council President Antonio Costa warned on Friday that Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza City must have consequences for EU-Israel relations.
- On Thursday, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to control Gaza City and extend authority over the Gaza Strip before transferring power to a civilian administration.
- Warning of risks to surviving hostages, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir urged Israel’s Security Cabinet that occupying Gaza would entail lengthy military and economic repercussions.
- Amid mounting international condemnation, these governments reaffirmed their rejection of Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza and urged diplomatic negotiations for a two-state solution.
- The UN Security Council will meet on Saturday to discuss the Gaza operation, set to last at least six months with over 61,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023, and Germany halts military exports.
