Thousands of Pregnant Women at Risk in Yemeni City of Taiz, UN Agency Says
UNFPA says fighting and blockades have cut off care for pregnant women in Taiz, where only 5 of 27 emergency facilities still function.
- On Tuesday, the United Nations Population Fund reported that fighting and access restrictions in Taiz have left more than 13,000 pregnant women without essential healthcare, leading to more miscarriages.
- Escalating clashes between the Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement have isolated Taiz for a month, blocking essential humanitarian supplies and preventing civilians from leaving.
- Only 5 of 27 designated maternal facilities remain functional, leaving about 147,000 women without care; daily deliveries at the Yemeni-Swedish Motherhood and Childhood Hospital have fallen to around 5 from 10.
- UNFPA representative Francesco Galtieri warned "Unless access restrictions are lifted in the coming days, the hospital itself could close." Physical stress among 6,400 displaced pregnant women risks about 1,500 obstetric emergencies.
- More than 800,000 people in Taiz have been cut off from food assistance since early October. The city hosts half of the 300,000 people displaced across Yemen, where the Arab region's highest maternal mortality rate was already estimated at three women dying daily from complications.
