Rich countries fall far short on climate adaptation funding, UN says

The UN says developed countries provided just $28.2 billion in 2024, far below the $305 billion developing nations need each year by 2035.

  • On Wednesday, the 2026 Adaptation Gap Report revealed that developing countries require roughly $305 billion annually by 2035 for climate adaptation, yet rich nations are falling well short of this target.
  • Negotiators at last year's Brazil conference agreed to the COP30 Global Mutir—a Portuguese word meaning "collective task"—to triple adaptation support by 2035, yet international public funding remains a fraction of what is needed.
  • International public funding reached $28.2 billion in 2024, but even if tripled to $120 billion annually, it would cover only 29 per cent of estimated adaptation needs after inflation.
  • UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen warned that the world is not ready to adapt to current climatic conditions as global temperatures approach the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold.
  • Nations are preparing to meet in Antalya, Turkey, next week for COP31, where negotiators will examine why current financing remains off track to meet pledges made in Baku at COP29.
