New York. The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) voted overwhelmingly to condemn the economic blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for the thirty-third year in a row, with 165 votes in favour, seven against and 12 abstentions.

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to end the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba despite U.S. lobbying efforts. The resolution saw 165 votes in favor, condemning the embargo described as collective punishment by Cuban officials. Only the U.S. Congress can lift the embargo officially.
The vote took place at a United Nations summit and was adopted with 165 votes in favour. Only seven countries rejected the measure and twelve abstained.
