UK's Healey says minimum wage to rise by 3.9%
Healey said 2.3 million low-paid workers will get a 3.9% pay rise as the government lifts both minimum wage rates.
On Wednesday, Chancellor John Healey announced a 3.9% increase to the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage, affecting 2.3 million of Britain's lowest-paid workers.
Britain's main minimum wage rate has risen by around 50% since 2020; in March, the Labour government tweaked the Low Pay Commission's remit to account for labor market conditions.
The National Living Wage will increase to £13.21 an hour and the 18-20 National Minimum Wage to £11.27, addressing what the Labour Party called "discriminatory" lower rates.
Businesses in retail and hospitality have complained about rising costs, though there is no clear evidence that the increased minimum wage has cost large numbers of jobs.
Consumer price inflation hit 3.5% in September; the Low Pay Commission had previously estimated the National Living Wage would likely need to rise by around 3.7% in 2027.
