Ukrainian Startup, GomSpace Test Satellite for Future Communications Network

The test satellite is undergoing trials to build an independent network that could diversify communications and strengthen Ukraine’s strategic security, HIMERA said.

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Ukrainian radio maker HIMERA and Danish nanosatellite company GomSpace announced the successful launch of OBRIA NANO, a test satellite that reached orbit on Oct. 1 aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission.
  • HIMERA co-founder and CEO Misha Rudominskyi stated the project aims to strengthen strategic security and reduce dependence on external communications providers during wartime. The initiative addresses critical risks created by reliance on foreign-made technology.
  • The satellite is currently undergoing technical trials to provide practical experience for future system design. HIMERA plans to localize production of satellites and ground terminals in Ukraine, eventually deploying a constellation to complement European networks.
  • A Ukrainian operator will control OBRIA NANO, ensuring the satellite serves the nation's strategic security needs. GomSpace CEO Carsten Drachmann welcomed the partnership, citing shared ambition to strengthen Ukraine's independent communications potential.
  • Amid regional competition, Russia is developing the Rassvet satellite network as a domestic alternative to Starlink. Built by Bureau 1440, the Russian system could eventually allow forces to control long-range drones over Ukraine in real time.
